Eulogy by Rachel Van Dyken
Publication Date: February 20th, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance
All is lost.
I don’t recognize myself in the mirror anymore.
My thoughts are filled with hatred and dripping with rage.
I’ve lost my soul.
She took it to the depths of Hell with her and haunts me with images of what could have been.
Sixty lives are mine to take.
Sixty lives stand in the way of my vengeance.
Sixty lives plus one more.
When the last drop of blood falls — mine will be spilled.
Only one person stands in the way.
She doesn’t realize I’ll kill her too.
I don’t own a heart.
And even if I did — I wouldn’t fall prey to its lies again.
I am Chase Abandonato.
Heir to a legacy of betrayal.
And I will kill them all.
Even if it means pointing the gun at myself.
A life for a life.
A soul for a soul.
Now I lay me down to sleep… I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
Blood in. No out.
This was my first time reading the Eagle Elite series and surprisingly, I understood pretty much everything. That says a lot about Rachel’s writing since this is book NINE in the series and the stories are woven together very tightly and characters from the previous books make appearances in this story. It is not necessary to read the previous books to enjoy this one but you will definitely want to read them anyway after reading Eulogy. I am now desperate to read the entire series and really get to meet and fall in love with all of the characters and finally see the bigger picture and get the full experience.
That said, if you do decide to skip the rest of the books then you are in for massive spoilers. I personally don’t mind spoilers so that’s why I decided to dive right into Eulogy.
Eulogy is the story of Chase and Luciana. Chase has been betrayed and now he is a mess. He used to be the funny guy and now he is angry and bitter all the time. He is lost and all he wants to do is kill and damn the consequences, he will end up killed anyway. Luciana is an innocent and sweet lawyer who was hired to work for the families (all of the families that are part of this series). She had no idea what she was getting into when she got the job but she definitely didn’t expect to live (and work) with the sexiest and angriest man alive. At the beginning, he threatens to kill her at least once a day just by being herself. Then the more time they spend together the more they fall for each other. Well, the more Luc falls for Chase since Chase claims there is nothing her can give her and he knows it’ll only be a matter of days until his death. And then… there’s also that one little thing they didn’t see coming that could possibly end up in another huge betrayal and a shot to the head.
I barely have enough words to describe how out-of-this-word amazing Eulogy is. It blew me away. I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. I knew it was going to be intense, dark and full of violence and that is a little out of my comfort zone since I always go for the light, fun and fluffy romance stories but holy crap, I think my comfort zone just got a whole lot bigger.
I loved absolutely everything in this book. The writing, the intense passion between Luc and Chase, the loyalty between all of the families, the pace of the story, the unbelievably romantic scenes, all of the steaming hot moments and even the couple of chapters narrated by characters who appear in the previous books. There is absolutely nothing I would change about this book. Rachel Van Dyken’s magical writing skills pulled on every single heart string inside of me. I went from being worried to being angry to being excited to being in love to being scared shitless. I went through hell while reading this book and I cannot recommend it enough. It was the sweetest torture I’ve ever experienced.
5 / 5 flowers
BLOOD. BLOOD. BLOOD.
It covered my hands.
It surged through my heart.
It dripped from my fingertips onto the concrete floor.
Insanity scratched its way into my psyche as I eyed the door and waited. One heartbeat, two heartbeats, three…
I fired two rounds, and acrid smoke filled the air.
I thought I knew what love was. I was a fucking idiot. Every single bone in my body shuddered with rage, with the need to rip something apart, someone, anyone —all of them. My friends. My brothers. I brought the war to our house, and they would finish me because of it.
I’d thought I loved her.
Our love had been a lie.
Her betrayal my only truth.
Now, I finally knew what love was. I’d seen it, smelled it, tasted it.
And lost it.
I’d fucking lost it.
They would pay. They would all pay.
For taking her.
For turning her against me.
For making me believe that blood was everything, only after mine was spilled.
