Review: Meet Cute; Some People Are Destined To Meet

Whether or not you believe in fate, or luck, or love at first sight, every romance has to start somewhere. MEET CUTE is an anthology of original short stories featuring tales of “how they first met” from some of today’s most popular YA authors.

Readers will experience Nina LaCour’s beautifully written piece about two Bay Area girls meeting via a cranky customer service Tweet, Sara Shepard’s glossy tale about a magazine intern and a young rock star, Nicola Yoon’s imaginative take on break-ups and make-ups, Katie Cotugno’s story of two teens hiding out from the police at a house party, and Huntley Fitzpatrick’s charming love story that begins over iced teas at a diner. There’s futuristic flirting from Kass Morgan and Katharine McGee, a riveting transgender heroine from Meredith Russo, a subway missed connection moment from Jocelyn Davies, and a girl determined to get out of her small town from Ibi Zoboi. Jennifer Armentrout writes a sweet story about finding love from a missing library book, Emery Lord has a heartwarming and funny tale of two girls stuck in an airport, Dhonielle Clayton takes a thoughtful, speculate approach to pre-destined love, and Julie Murphy dreams up a fun twist on reality dating show contestants.

This incredibly talented group of authors brings us a collection of stories that are at turns romantic and witty, epic and everyday, heartbreaking and real.

Meet Cute is my very first anthology and oh boy did I love it! They are short stories so you don’t really read everything that happens in the character’s universe or you don’t really know what happens next which could be a little sad if you fall in love with some characters like I did. But there’s something so nice about just knowing the beginning of.

Disclaimer: I’m so sorry for the overuse of the words cute and sweet and for changing my favorite, I wrote this as I was reading the book.

SIEGE ETIQUETTE by Katie Cotugno

So… I hated Hailey, she’s the kind of ‘princess’ character I really don’t like, maybe if the story continued and she realized what’s really important in life and fell in love with Wolf and all that jazz I wouldn’t have disliked it as much, but since it’s all pre-change Hailey, I didn’t like her.

The story itself though, it is really really good. I sort of related to it a little since I’ve been in that cop-hidding situation (no underage drinking, I promise… at least not from me), it was fun to sort of understand that.

And I also think that Wolf is a very cute and sweet character, I really liked him.

PRINT SHOP by Nina LaCour

Print Shop is such a cute story! Evie is amazing, not going to lie, at first I hated Lauren, mainly because I hate annoying petty costumers, but as the stor went on I started to like her more and at the end I was left wanting t know more about their story! I really really liked this story, Nina LaCour is great.

It really surprised me because I imagined the story going a certain way and it went on a whole other direction and it was magical! If I had to describe this story in just one word, it’d be cute.

HOURGLASS by Ibi Zoboi

This story is so amazing! I can’t say I personally related to it because everything about me screams average, but that didn’t stop me from really really liking it.

Cherish is such an amazing, strong character, she doesn’t let things get her down and I truly admire that.

Ibi Zoboi is a genious and Hourglass is an empowering, sweet story co-starring Mamadou which sounds like the sweetest guy ever!

CLICK by Katharine McGee

Oh my god I loved Click! It’s such a lovely story and I now feel like reading a whole Click book, it’s cute, romantic and simply amazing. I loved Alexa, Raden and the adventure.

I really loved it.

There’s truly nothing else for me to say.

THE INTERN by Sara Shepard

The Intern is such a nice story. Phineas is just so cute and supporting. I loved Clara’s growing moments, they were really nice to read, I didn’t love her princess-y side that showed a little but it wasn’t too bad.

This is a very cute story about being yourself again and I really liked it.

SOMEWHERE THAT’S GREEN by Meredith Russo

Oh my goodness this story… I love Nia, I love Lexie and I love how brave they are.

There’s something so inspiring about Nia being herself that just glows through the pages and Lexie being strong enough to take back her statement and show the world her true self, it just warms my heart.

THE WAY WE LOVE HERE by Dhonielle Clayton

Oh boy, I think this might be my favorite so far.

The Way We Love Here is just so freaking cute! I love Vio and Sebastien, the romance is perfection, the mystery, the magic, the string… I just fell for it.

I loved it and I’m not really one to go for more fantasy fiction books but this one truly stole my heart.

OOMPH by Emery Lord

Oomph is just so… oomph!

I adored the story, it’s really cute and I mostly adored it because I have a soft spot for airport stories, Cassidy and Jo came in and went straight for that spot, I couldn’t help but adore them and their story.

I love Emery Lord!

THE DICTIONARY OF YOU AND ME by Jennifer L. Armentrout

OH MY GOD.

Okay, this is my favorite one. It’s just like a fairytale, a bookworm fairytale.

Moss and Tyler are my favorite couple ever. Tyler is the absolute cutest, he’s so nice, sweet and funny but he’s also shy and I’m just so in love! I’m truly wholeheartedly in love. Thank you Jennifer Armentrout!

THE UNLIKELY LIKELIHOOD OF FALLING IN LOVE by Jocelyn Davies

This story is so cute and so unlike anything I typically go for, it’s all about logical thinking which… I normally go for dreamy fairytale side but this story is really nice and this is coming from a romance bubble head.

I found the set-up very appealing, which might be a weird thing to mention, but I really liked it as well as the story and the characters.

259 MILLION MILES by Kass Morgan

I’m a little mind blown right now.

This story is so good! It really gave me some The Space Between Us vibes and it’s just great. It’s so sweet and heart squeezing, the whole scenario, characters, the way it’s developed and written. It’s amazing!

SOMETHING REAL by Julie Murphy

Something Real is so funny!

I’ve always found dating shows funny, there’s something about how they’re staged that I find hilarious and this story is just great! It’s funny throughout and incredibly cute at the end. It’s so good.

SAY EVERYTHING by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Oh boy.

I liked the story as I was reading it, I thought it was very cute, sweet, funny, it fulfilled my needs perfectly but the end… oh my god the end just made my heart explode. The closing quote is just so good! I’m going to keep it forever because I just loved it so much!

THE DEPARTMENT OF DEAD LOVE by Nicola Yoon

Oh how I wish the DODL actually existed.

I absolutely love love love this story! It’s cute and sweet all along, Thomas and Gabby are just so adorable. The love story is absolute perfection and the whole DODL universe is amazing!

Nicola Yoon did an amazing job with this story. I absolutely loved it and it’s one of my two favorites

Meet Cute is the perfect book. It has something for everyone, LGBTQ+, dreamy romanticism, logical thinking romanticism, fantasy. I feel like all of the authors brought something really unique and the compilation of it all is what made it a truly unique piece that, I think, everyone should read.
